Parents interested in baptizing their babies or young children under the age of 7 need to sign up for baptism preparation.
“Baptism brings about a new birth. It celebrates, through rites and symbols, the gift of new life…”, according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Baptism is a communal celebration which reminds us all of our baptismal promises.
In order to give the Sacrament of Baptism its proper context of welcoming a new person in the church and into the faith community, the last weekend of each month, baptisms will be a part of our Mass celebration. We celebrate Baptism within Mass “so that the entire community may be present and the relationship between Baptism and the Eucharist may be clearly seen” (The Rites of the Catholic Church). The child being baptized needs the faith community and we need those children and families who come for baptism. As always, when scheduling the time for celebrating a baptism, the first consideration is the welfare of the child, that he/she may not be deprived of the benefit of the sacrament, and also the well-being of the family. Scheduling concerns may lead to a baptism following the Mass, and other members of the community are welcome to participate in these as well. Let us celebrate with joy at the great work of redemption between God and humankind. The sacraments of the Church are the “masterworks of God” in the new and everlasting covenant. All parents seeking to baptize their child must attend our class. God loves us more than a father, mother, friend, or any else could love, and even more than we are able to love ourselves. (St. John Chrysostom)
Please note: at least one baptized, confirmed and practicing Catholic godparent is necessary to baptize a child in the Catholic faith, as is permission from both parents/guardians. Proof of confirmation for the Catholic godparent will be needed prior to baptism. Additional friends and family are welcome to stand up during the baptism, and a significant person who is not Catholic may participate as a Christian witness. Please register as members of IHM if you wish to receive baptism here, or obtain a letter of permission from your current pastor. Parents seeking baptism for their newborn, infant, or young child (under the age of 7) must attend the class; Godparents are also strongly encouraged to attend.
